For unclear reasons, the Pentagon was reportedly slow to approve emergency requests to send troops to regain control of the building. Meanwhile, as the sitting president, Trump retained command and control over both federal law enforcement and US military forces that eventually helped secure the Capitol. America’s lame-duck period gave insurrectionists loyal to President Donald Trump two full months to plan the putsch that briefly occupied the Capitol and forced lawmakers to flee in terror - and they were egged on this entire time by a president who encouraged them to stage a “wild” protest while lawmakers formally certified Biden’s victory on January 6. The dangers of a long lame-duck period have come into stark relief in the wake of last week’s storming of the US Capitol. Japan’s Abe Shinzo, the last Japanese politician to preside over a transition of partisan rule, also took office 10 days after his party won an election. He became prime minister just 10 days later. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party won his election on May 16, 2014. French President Emmanuel Macron won election on May 7, 2017, and was sworn in just one week later. Modern democracies, in other words, can and do transfer power very rapidly - and much faster than the two and a half months that separate President-elect Joe Biden’s election on November 3, 2020, and his inauguration on January 20, 2021, the official transition date established by the 20th Amendment. Just five days after the election, Cameron became prime minister. On May 6, 2010, Britain held its most recent election where control of its government changed partisan hands - voters tossed out the incumbent Labour Party government and replaced it with a coalition led by the Conservative Party’s David Cameron. Just over two weeks later, on November 4, Trudeau was sworn in as prime minister.įive years earlier, a very similar series of events played out in Great Britain. On October 19, 2015, Canadians voted to end nearly a decade of Conservative Party government and elect a new government led by Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau.

The following pages do not claim to offer a complete teaching on fraternal love, but rather to consider its universal scope, its openness to every man and woman. I have also incorporated, along with my own thoughts, a number of letters, documents and considerations that I have received from many individuals and groups throughout the world.Ħ. The present Encyclical takes up and develops some of the great themes raised in the Document that we both signed. This was no mere diplomatic gesture, but a reflection born of dialogue and common commitment. In this case, I have felt particularly encouraged by the Grand Imam Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, with whom I met in Abu Dhabi, where we declared that “God has created all human beings equal in rights, duties and dignity, and has called them to live together as brothers and sisters”. In the preparation of Laudato Si’, I had a source of inspiration in my brother Bartholomew, the Orthodox Patriarch, who has spoken forcefully of our need to care for creation. In this Encyclical, I have sought to bring together many of those statements and to situate them in a broader context of reflection. In recent years, I have spoken of them repeatedly and in different settings. Issues of human fraternity and social friendship have always been a concern of mine. He became one of the poor and sought to live in harmony with all. Yet there Francis was able to welcome true peace into his heart and free himself of the desire to wield power over others. In the world of that time, bristling with watchtowers and defensive walls, cities were a theatre of brutal wars between powerful families, even as poverty was spreading through the countryside. Indeed, “only the man who approaches others, not to draw them into his own life, but to help them become ever more fully themselves, can truly be called a father”. In this way, he became a father to all and inspired the vision of a fraternal society. He understood that “God is love and those who abide in love abide in God” ( 1 Jn 4:16). Francis did not wage a war of words aimed at imposing doctrines he simply spread the love of God. We are impressed that some eight hundred years ago Saint Francis urged that all forms of hostility or conflict be avoided and that a humble and fraternal “subjection” be shown to those who did not share his faith.Ĥ. In the context of the times, this was an extraordinary recommendation. Unconcerned for the hardships and dangers involved, Francis went to meet the Sultan with the same attitude that he instilled in his disciples: if they found themselves “among the Saracens and other nonbelievers”, without renouncing their own identity they were not to “engage in arguments or disputes, but to be subject to every human creature for God’s sake”. Francis’ fidelity to his Lord was commensurate with his love for his brothers and sisters. That journey, undertaken at the time of the Crusades, further demonstrated the breadth and grandeur of his love, which sought to embrace everyone. It was his visit to Sultan Malik-el-Kamil, in Egypt, which entailed considerable hardship, given Francis’ poverty, his scarce resources, the great distances to be traveled and their differences of language, culture and religion. There is an episode in the life of Saint Francis that shows his openness of heart, which knew no bounds and transcended differences of origin, nationality, colour or religion. Wherever he went, he sowed seeds of peace and walked alongside the poor, the abandoned, the infirm and the outcast, the least of his brothers and sisters.ģ. Francis felt himself a brother to the sun, the sea and the wind, yet he knew that he was even closer to those of his own flesh. This saint of fraternal love, simplicity and joy, who inspired me to write the Encyclical Laudato Si’, prompts me once more to devote this new Encyclical to fraternity and social friendship. In his simple and direct way, Saint Francis expressed the essence of a fraternal openness that allows us to acknowledge, appreciate and love each person, regardless of physical proximity, regardless of where he or she was born or lives.Ģ. Of the counsels Francis offered, I would like to select the one in which he calls for a love that transcends the barriers of geography and distance, and declares blessed all those who love their brother “as much when he is far away from him as when he is with him”. With these words, Saint Francis of Assisi addressed his brothers and sisters and proposed to them a way of life marked by the flavour of the Gospel.
It was jarring to see our survivors look so much like normal (read: showered) people throughout this episode, free of dirt, wearing matching clothes, some of them even sporting brushed hair. And if we've learned anything from Rick over the years, Deanna should be afraid. Later, he again tries to warn Deanna that people, and not zombies, "are the real threat now." He's right. "We're here now," he says smugly, metaphorically brushing his shoulders off. "They're the luckiest damn people I've ever met, and they just keep getting luckier," Rick muses in his meeting with Carol and Daryl. Regardless of what Pete's up to, it seems Rick has his own evil plans lurking not-so-deeply beneath the surface, as he appears ready and willing to take what he wants - the guns, Jessie - and leave the citizens of Alexandria to their own, pitifully-prepared devices. Maybe little Sam is addicted to cookies because the chocolate chips remind him of the delicious flecks of blood of fallen comrades?) (I know, I know, my kneejerk reaction to everything this season seems to be "cannibals," but I'm not alone in that theory - and honestly, expecting the worst from everyone sort of makes watching the show more fun. Turns out, he's the Pete that Aaron mentioned offhandedly a couple weeks ago, a doctor and a supposed "gifted surgeon." I'm not buying that he's as friendly as he's pretending to be out in public I suspect there's something darker at play inside the doctor, though of course I can only speculate at this point. Last week, he was sitting in the dark on his porch, drunkenly calling out to Rick in a not-so-friendly manner this week, he's gamely shaking the sheriff's hand, getting him a drink refill, and offering to check him out - in a medical manner, of course. Pete's an enigma so far, but his character is becoming more and more complicated by the minute. Rick, meanwhile, seems emboldened by his return to law enforcement, brazenly kissing Jessie on the cheek at Deanna's party and fingering his holster just a shade longer than normal as he later watches the woman walk by with her husband, Pete. Good thing she also has unfettered access to all those ¼ chocolate bars. That's some seriously twisted manipulation, but it seemingly works, with Sam agreeing to keep his mouth shut in exchange for an endless supply of Carol's homemade Blackmail Cookies* (*recipe forthcoming in the next edition of Betty Crocker's Undead Cookbook). And then afterwards, no one will ever know what happened to you," she says, her smile becoming icier and icier as she inches closer and closer to the child. No one suspects the lady in the sensible floral sweater.) But surprise, she's stealing guns instead, and after Sam says he has to tell his mom what he saw, Carol gives what may be one of the best monologues in "Walking Dead" history, sweetly informing the boy that if he tattles, she'll take him from his bed, tie him to a tree, and let the zombies go to town on him. (Carol really aced the whole Susie Homemaker routine, it seems. Sam, the younger son of comely hairdresser Jessie, followed Carol from the gathering, assuming she was off to make him some more cookies. It's Carol who does that deed during Deanna's impromptu dinner party - and she would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for that meddling kid. This leads to her scheming with Rick and Daryl (in what seems to be a now-regular - and secret from the rest of the group - debriefing session) to leave the latch to the storage room window unlocked, thus allowing one of them to slip in after hours and make off with a few weapons to keep to themselves, should things go south in the settlement. Once again, I have to give my gold star this week to Carol, who made good on her machinations to infiltrate the Alexandria Bored Housewives Club and uncover the community's secrets, including where they stash all the guns and ammo (and infuriatingly small-portioned chocolate bars more on those in a minute), and when those items will be left unattended. And there's a near-perfect chance that all three of those things will come back to bite our survivors by season's end. "The Walking Dead" may have returned from midseason hiatus weeks ago, but after a handful of middling to terrible episodes, the show was officially back this week - along with Carol's backbone, Rick's sex drive, and Daryl's ability to trust. Converting VideoĬonverting video can’t possibly be easier than it is with UniConverter. Since these are the main features of the program, let’s go through and test each one to see how well they work. There are five main areas of the program easily accessible with the filmstrip at the top of the opening dashboard screen: Convert, Download, Burn, Transfer and Toolbox. The first thing you’ll notice about UniConverter is how streamlined the user interface is. Fortunately, the user interfaces on both versions are almost exactly the same, so JP will point out the differences if they are worth noting. JP also tested UniConverter for Mac on his MacBook Pro, running macOS Sierra. Note: the screenshots used in this review are taken from the Windows version. Detailed Review of Wondershare UniConverter Read more from the “Reasons Behind My Review Ratings” section. I received a reply from a support agent, but it was essentially a scripted response that did not directly address any of my concerns or answer the simple question I asked. I have contacted them to inquire about the only bug that I encountered using Wondershare UniConverter, opening a support ticket with their virtual help department. Even though I am experienced with their programs, Wondershare has had no editorial or content input on this review and has not impacted the findings in my review in any way. I also have experience working with the other major Wondershare video editing program, Filmora. User experience has always been one of my passions because it can turn a powerful program into an unusable mess or transform the most basic program into a joy to work with. As part of my training as a graphic designer, I’ve spent time learning and working with various types of motion graphics and video editing software, examining both their video capabilities and their user experiences. I’ve been working and playing with PC software of all kinds for over 25 years, from small open-source programs to industry-standard software suites.
